About Sri Chinmoy
the foundation for lasting peace lies within
Sri Chinmoy dedicated his entire life to serving the world community. Each of Sri Chinmoy’s myriad of activities was, and remains, an invocation of peace, inspiring us to infuse our endeavours with peaceful intent. Across all he did lay a central message: the foundation for lasting peace lies within. Unless and until we develop inner peace, we cannot effectively spread peace in the world around us.
Sri Chinmoy believed that: “music is the mother tongue of humanity”, and that through music we can inspire the best in humanity to blossom. Sri Chinmoy played more than 170 instruments; and over his lifetime, composed more than 15,000 songs, and performed more than 700 peace concerts around the world, including several in Vancouver. At his 1998 concert at Chan Center for the Performing Arts, the University of British Columbia honoured him with the “Peace Dreamer Award”. Here on the West Coast, a "Peace Tree" dedicated to his lifetime of self-giving stands at the Peace Arch Park between Canada and the United States.
On October 13, 1988, Sri Chinmoy inspired owner and manager, Panchajanya Christian Burri to open a universal music store with instruments from all over the world, and offered the store the name “Gandharva Loka" which means: “the Abode of Celestial Musicians”. This Granville Island store is dedicated to the life of Sri Chinmoy and his everlasting message of peace. www.srichinmoy.org
