Darbuka
The darbuka, or goblet drum, is an ancient drum of Middle Eastern origin, and like the bendir, there is evidence of it having been used in Mesopotamia over 3,000 years ago. It has a goblet-shaped body which is traditionally made from clay and with a fish or goat skin. Modern Darbukas are also be made of metal, like aluminum, brass and copper. The skins are often made from plastic, but in order to produce a warmer, deeper sound, natural skins are used too. The musician places the drum sideways onto their knee or under their arm and plays with fingers. The vast variety of tonal expression make this an exceptional solo drum.
